Some Blog Changes
Though certainly not reviews, I decided to do the Friday Five, because, well, seems like an interesting idea. I have also added (in a nod to Meghan's blog) a list of the current things I am reading, playing, listening to, and the latest movie I have watched.
Friday Five
1. How are you planning to spend the summer [winter]?
Summer: research, as detailed below, on fractals. (By winter do they mean like if I was in Australia? I'll assume so as I have no plans for winter currently).
2. What was your first summer job?
Working at a snack bar (like at a baseball park). Bees were my nemesis.
3. If you could go anywhere this summer [winter], where would you go?
Probably Japan, or Europe. I love Europe, and I have an intense desire to visit Japan...it seems so cool.
4. What was your worst vacation ever?
Once our family went to the Manitoulin islands and the car broke half way there...that wasn't too much fun.
5. What was your best vacation ever?
Going to Europe (Amsterdam, Paris and Northern France, England) when I was 16.
Kingdom Hearts
After some random internet browsing I ending up reading about Kingdom Hearts, for no apparent reason. Thus I have decided to talk about it. Bear I mind I only played about 4 hours in. The reason for this, however, is that I thought the game wasn't that interesting. The concept of having Disney and FF characters is initially interesting, but ultimately silly: the section on "which movie this Disney character first appeared in" is just blatant advertising. The combat is boooooooring. As far as I can tell, one does this: presses x, x, then X!, broken up occasionally by some random spell. One's companions (Donald and Goofy) meander around acting ineffectual. The story, like the idea, is initially interesting, but once one leaves the first island, it peters out.
What I was surprised about was how many reviewers liked it so much. Greg Kasavin, of Gamespot says "it successfully captures the spirit both of Square and Disney in a single game". I think that's crazy. I guess his and my viewpoints differ on RPG's: he only gave Xenosaga an 8.1/10, for crying out loud! :)
