The next day I stay in bed until 9 in the morning. The previous night I had started freaking out about my rental application, specifically because I hadn't put down my current super's phone #, as I didn't know it. I started thinking, how can they accept my application if they don't know anything about my credit/reliability, and the only way of determining that must be through my super, right? M found our super's number for me that morning, but I was still worried - if they refused my application, as this was my last day in Halifax, I was basically screwed. Ten minutes before the appointed hour to call the super (it was supposed to be noon), I called. My fears were groundless - they had accepted my application, provided I get a co-signer. I left quite happy. I walked back through the nearby cemetary, which contains the gravesites of those who died on the Titanic. Got a great deal for lunch up the road - two slices of pizza for $2. Found an Indian grocer 20 min from our new apt. All was well. For the rest of the day I wondered about the downtown. Watched a bit of Portugal/Russia in an Irish bar (which, incidentally, had 0 references to Bloomsday), had Udon noodles for dinner, and finished my tour by finding a great bookstore. On my way back to campus I walked up the Citadel hill and around, finding a huge common area/greenspace on the other side - another example of excellent planning by the city. Lots of people there reading, lounging, playing sports - even a group riding horses.
Overall, I was very impressed by Halifax - it could well end up being my favourite Canadian city (I've been to TO, Ottawa, K-W, and QC also). In the residential area it feels like a quiet, friendly town, while it has the best downtown I know of. Being right by the harbor/ocean gives new views and good breezes. Finally, as far as I can tell, the city has no pretensions - it doesn't claim anything, and people all seem friendly. I think I will enjoy it here.
