I finally saw a movie I wanted to see a long time ago: Unbreakable. I found it quite absorbing, and thoroughly enjoyed it all round, though I still entirely can't say why. I suppose I found it fairly unique: a real-life take on the superhero genre. Actually, now that I think about it, one thing certainly stands out about the movie: long scenes. Sounds like a dumb thing, but so many big movies in theatres lack that: scenes which are simply characters talking for long periods, or long silent camera shots. Big movies nowadays seem to go for the quick, change-before-we-lose-their-interest idea. Long scenes were also something I liked about Red, which I saw recently, and is certainly a stand-out feature of one of my favourite movies of all time, 2001. Speaking of 2001, the last time I saw it I went absolutely nuts because I was watching it on TV, the problem being: commercials. You know the scene where the ape throws the bone up, and suddenly the scene switches to the ship floating in space? They cut between the two with a commercial. That's a friggin' travesty. It's one of the coolest parts of the whole movie. Anyways, CityTV was showing Unbreakable, and while they didn't cut away at any bad times, they seemed to have a commercial break every 10 min. Also very frustrating.
Speaking of movies, I was happy to see Shyamalan not use product placement. The one scene in which a product was clearly visible, the name was blurred out. Very nice. I hate product placement in movies. See The Terminal, Spiderman, and others for bad examples.
As for Unbreakable, I really liked the ending, which I remember many people seeming to dislike. I thought it made sense and brought a nice completeness to the whole thing. Didn't like the text-over, but I don't see how else that could have been handled. Overall, I liked the movie more than the The Sixth Sense, and way more than Signs. Unbreakable seemed more about making a whole movie and less about tricking the viewer.
Also watched Chelsea-Celtic friendly today. Chelsea looked like their old 03/04 selves: brilliant in flashes, collectively asleep the rest of the time. Celtic also looked the same as I had seen them before: not very good at all. Kezman was the standout player for me. He scored Chelsea's 3rd and 4th goals, and looks like a deadly, deadly striker.
