Campus Adventures!! (Part I)

Since I had to go get a "DalCard" this morning, I thought I'd explore the campus as well. I first attempted to find Seymour street, where the DalCard office was. Unhelpfully, the city had decided to label Seymour street as Vernon street. Some many minutes later, I arrived at the office, which is a house. It's very cool. You go in the front door, wipe your feet, and proceed into the living room, where the people who run "ancillary services" (Dalcard, housing, etc..) work. It's so cool. It's like they permanently work at home. I don't mean they live there, I mean the ambiance is like it's someone's actual living room.

I then proceeded to the Student Union building, which seems like one of the more happening places. I looked in the bookstore, which was of course a bad idea, as it made me sob (inwardly) at my lack of money to purchase such vast riches as exist in campus bookstores. Two odd things: they tape up your backpack before you enter, and to get to the bookstore, one proceeds through a cafeteria. Very odd.

My greatest thrill of the day came in finding the prices at two local food vendors. The hot dog cart sells both hot dogs and sausages for $2. That's insane! In Waterloo, hot dogs are $2.50, sausages $3.50! Then, the grad house serves Chinese food, and with the exception of one menu item, everything was $2 or less! I saw someone bring out their food, and clearly you really do get a pile of food for $2. Insanity. The chinese there will be my next food stop. (I tried the sausage today: good sausages, though a cheap bun. Lots of condiments available).

Next, to the library, where I re-discovered something very pleasant: grad students get term loans! And, heaven be praised, I'm a grad student. Which means I could sign out the book for my category theory class for the whole term!

That is all for today's campus adventures. Oh, I went to the Dalplex too, but it was hard to get around as pretty much everyone on campus was there (it was sign-up day for team sports).
