My head feels like it's gonna explode when I look at all the content available for UT2004. I just can't choose what to play next. Below I discussed my affection for Red Orchestra, but I have downloaded or am downloading Air Buccanneers (you're a pirate in a hot air balloon!), Alien Swarm, Unwheel, list goes on. Then there's the two bonus packs released by the "community" of some 40-odd maps, new music, skins, etc...finally, in late September, they're releasing UT2004 Editor's Edition, with new vehicles and maps for Onslaught, and all that content'll be free for those who own the game.
Half of the above mods aren't even FPS's, they're sports games, strategy games, racing games...buying this game has been like buying a new console where the games come for free :) Well, maybe not quite that good, but you get the idea.
I couldn't figure out why the modding community was so good for UT2004 until I read somewhere that the engine for UT2003 and UT2004 are quite similar. Thus, anyone working on a mod for UT2003 could just port it over to UT2004 when it arrived. Great news for mod authors - with little effort, they're mod can stay up-to-date with the latest technology. Everyone wins.
