You know what one of my biggest pet peaves is? Laws against consensual acts. If I want to do something with you, and you agree to it, why the hell should the government say we can't do that? What possible justification can one give for making a law against consensual acts? This applies to sex, Sunday shopping, minimum wage, drugs, you name it. If all parties involved agree to something, they believe it is in their best interests, so there is no reason why the government should interfere.
I say this because while at lunch today I read yet another editorial against Sunday shopping. (Nova Scotia, if you didn't know, is the only province in Canada which still does not allow people to shop on Sundays). Many of the arguments against Sunday shopping are good ones: we need a day of rest, one shouldn't be shopping all the time, it's good to take to reflect, etc, etc....these are all good arguments why one shouldn't shop on Sunday - but that doens't mean the government should ban the act itself. If you want to buy something on Sunday, and someone wants to sell you something on Sunday, why shouldn't this be allowed to happen? If the government had a law for every thing that would be "in the best interest" of their citizens, we'd all eat the same food every day, work the same jobs, do the same things....it becomes ridiculous. Laws should exist to prevent acts which people don't want happening to themselves, not acts that they do.
