So as I mentioned below, I bought Burnout 3 a few days ago. I am starting to see why it was so highly rated amongst critics. I'll mention how great the AI is some other time (for an example of bad racing AI, see the Gran Turismo series), but what really amazes me is the attention to detail. The game seems to keep track of every single little thing. For example, when you crash, the game keeps track of everything you do as you crash (eg. 360 rotation + crushed mirror + into car + into rival + into big rig + explosion + 37 foot slide), and gives you points accordingly.
What really brough this to my attention was what happened when I was racing a few days ago. I was tailgating a rival car (of course, getting points for that), when a bus suddenly pulled out in a front of us. The car in front of me smashed into it and flew into the air, the bus (mysteriously, but it seemed to make sense at the time) also got pushed about 10 feet into the air. I simply froze, it all happened too quickly, and I drove underneath the bus, for its whole length, emerging unscathed. Ok, so that awesome, it was like being in Fast and the Furious or something, but then I looked up and saw the kicker: "Drove under bus: 100 points". I couldn't believe it. They have a statistic for driving under a bus, a situation which could only possibly happen one in every thousand or so races. Incredible.
