Since I haven't posted much lately, I'll post a whole bunch of links to keep people occupied: the media I've been entertained with recently :)
Books
Graphic Novels
Television Series
Video Games
That's all for today peoples! Hope you all are well. The weather here is lovely.
Books
- SpyCatcher: The memoirs of a British intelligence officer attempting to work out who in his service is a Russian agent. This, along with watching The Sandbaggers, has made me really question the usefulness of intelligence services. The amount of disinformation they get seems almost as much as the amount of real information they receive.
- The Looking Glass War: Back in the day, I read a whole bunch of John le Carre. After SpyCatcher, I thought I'd see how it was reading le Carre again. Not nearly as good as I remembered.
- The Pyrdain Chronicles: At M's house, I noticed these on her bookshelf, so decided to see how reading these again was. Again, a very dissapointing experience. There's so much fluff in these books, it's no wonder I read them so quickly: the eye just tends to skip over whole sections.
- Matilda: After these dissapointments, I noticed lots of Roald Dahl on M's shelves, so I thought I'd see how his books hold up. Great stuff. If I ever have children, I'm reading his books to them.
Graphic Novels
- Best of American Splendor: Another great Harvey Pekar collection. I don't know how he does it, but he managed to pick out quite fascinating stories out of everday life. And if you haven't seen it already, make sure you see the movie!
- Transmetropolitan vol. 4: I didn't care much for the first volume, but enjoyed the second and third ones. This one seemed to be just filling space - it didn't say anything the 3rd one hadn't already said. Interesting series though.
- Blankets: Lovely story, and an excellent use of the form of words and pictures. I'd rate it as highly as Jimmy Corrigan.
Television Series
- South Park: I watched so many episodes of this in bits and pieces, I never knew quite what to make of it. Now that I've actually seen at least the first season in full, I think it's quite brilliant. Every episode manages to deconstruct some major social issue, while at the same time being damn funny. Stone and Parker are possibly the most cynical bastards on the planet :)
Video Games
- World of Warcraft: I think I've finally gotten tired of it. Ah well. Since I've stopped playing it, I've been on an independent kick, checking out stuff from www.gametunnel.com, and been quite impressed with the interesting ideas people have come up with:
- Oasis: The only one I've actually bought so far ($20). A superb small game, the description of "Minesweeper meets Civilization" is very apt.
- Flatspace: The next game I'm seriously thinking of buying. It's something I've always wanted to write myself: a fully realized universe, with thousands of ships and people doing things at the same time as you. No storyline, but many, many different areas and missions, almost unlimited available interactions. Think Privateer or Elite. Incredibly, written by a single person.
- Breakquest: The only Arkanoid clone I've ever played that is actually interesting to play :)
- Plummit: A combination of The Incredible Machine, Pipes, and Tetris. Very well done puzzle/action game.
That's all for today peoples! Hope you all are well. The weather here is lovely.
Comments:
Do you own 'Blankets'? I've been meaning to read that for a while but am too cheap to buy it.
Ya, I bought it when the comic book store here had an anniversary sale, so 30% off! W00t! I'll bring it next time I come home, or you can read it if you come here.
Yay blankets! I already knew this comment would be here when I came, but it's still nice to know you got it on sale. Sales make me happy (take that, capitalism!)
