While at the Dal library last night, I decided to check out the wall of this week's new books. Randomly, I picked up Disowning Knowledge in Seven Plays of Shakespeare. I've now read most of the first essay on King Lear, and wow, it's really good. I don't know if I've read better Shakespearean criticism. What I've really appreciated, however, is not the content itself so much as that feeling I get when reading good philosophy or English essays. I don't know what it is, but it makes me feel so alive. I don't know why, but I've really got to make sure I don't forget to keep in touch with these kind of readings. I mean, math is great, and no doubt will be where the rest of my life is going, but I sure need these humanities "hits" (as in drugs) more rather than less frequently.
