I don't know why, but lately I just haven't felt like updating my blog. Anyways, here's what I've been up to these past few weeks (other than school-related things):
- We have new additions to our household: two clownfish. As M posted earlier, we saw signs that a lab at Dalhousie was closing down, and needed a home for its fish. For $50, we got a tank, coral, saltwater, and two little "Nemo" fish. I've been amazed at how quickly I have managed to tell them apart. Not only do they have different markings to tell them apart, they also behave very differently. One sits on the bottom of the tank all day and sulks, the other is highly active and always comes to the front on the tank when I come into the room. Pretty nice to have them, actually; I've always enjoyed seeing aquatic life.
- We bought a new dining table. How bourgeouise (sp?). However, I was sick of not being able to invite people over for dinner due to our lack of eating space.
- I have read some of my dad's favourite novels, works by David Lodge, over the past little while. Mostly, they deal with academic life, a world I am becoming more and more familiar with as times goes on. The books are themselves were pretty amusing.
- I've started reading Autograph Man, which so far is an excellent, excellent novel. She's amazingly talented, this Zadie Smith. Such an incredible attention to the intricacies and customs of modern life, and written so very well. Occasionally, its a bit pretentious, but on the whole its very good.
- I bought and played through Shadow of the Colossus, which was a fascinating experience. It's not really a game so much, more of an interactive form of art. There are creatures to fight, and areas to explore, but the emotional impact is something much more akin to real art. It reminded me a bit of Watchmen: both attempt to examine the underpinnings of the violent nature of their media. (Or rather, the violence that has been so often portrayed in their media). In Watchmen, the authors attempt to deconstruct the superhero archetype. In Shadow of the Colossus, the authors attempt to deconstruct good vs. evil, killing and consequences thereof. It's hard to go into too much more detail without spoiling things: if you enjoy video games, be sure to give it a try.
- I recently bought and am playing through Dragon Quest 8. It's awesome old-skool japanese rpg fun. What it does very, very well is transport the classic dragon quest/warrior games into a 3d interface, adds a bit more of a story, and polishes the interface, all without messing up what made the series fun. Good stuff.
- I have been appointed vice-chair of my church's council. So far, I haven't had to do any chairing of meetings, but it should be interesting when it happens. I got involved with the church politics at my last church as well, and while it can be very frustrating, it is also very, very enlightening, sitting together with a group of people trying to understand what the church, and we as individuals, should be doing.
- Lastly, M and I have been going to a little Turkish restaurant quite frankly lately, and we've had some great food. Anyone out there know any turkish recipes? I'd love to be able to make some of the kabobs and sauces we get there.

Personally, I don't think that having a dining table makes you bourgoisie (although maybe that's the bougeois in me talking? ;) -- it just means you are people with a social life who are tired of eating off their knees.
As for your reading, the only thing I can comment on is David Lodge (I read "Nice Work" over the summer). I found it very amusing as well, and understood completely why Dad would like it since it's a good tale of academic pretention getting it's just desserts.
