So someone fell/was pushed/jumped off one of the balconies in our building last night. About 1:30 am, a fire alarm went off, we all went down as usual. Someone said it was a fire alarm, so we went back upstairs. The alarm was still going off, though, so I went outside to get some fresh air and get away from the noise (it's really warm in Halifax these days).
I looked around, didn't really notice anything, but then one of the fire trucks came round to the back of the building where my balcony faces. A bunch of the people got out and went near a big green electrical box, I figured to do something about the fire alarm.
I looked over, and could see down the other wing of our floor. There were a bunch of people down the hallway, with one woman in particular jumping around, waving, and it looked like yelling as well. I figured she was upset about the fire alarm, or something.
I went back inside for a sec, and when I looked out again, I saw (what I assume to be) the same woman come running out of the back of the building, screaming "He's dead", and some other things I couldn't really make out. I could definately hear here say that, though. When I mean screaming, I mean not like any normal screaming, more like something as if she was literally going insane, right there. I can't get over this.
Anyways, it turns out what the fire-truck people were standing around was not the box there, but the guy's body. Then lots of police cars arrived, people took the woman away in an ambulance, lots of flashing lights and things. Eventually, everyone left, except for a policeman left to stand guard by the body. I always assumed they take it away or something, but no, they just covered it up with a sheet and left it there, cordoned off the area, and posted a guard. Another image stuck in my brain - the man, covered with sheet, but you could still see a foot sticking out.
------------------------------------------------
I've talked to a policeman this morning (there's one posted at the door of the apartment from where I guess the guy fell). He said they don't know what happened, the're still investigating, but someone "opened a hydrant" on the 11th floor, which led to flooding and (presumably) the fire alarm. I can't even begin to speculate what chain of events led to this guy's death.
Sorry if this is all rather morbid, but I think I needed to write about this, for myself, I mean.

Oh God. I'm so sorry -- and I hope you writing about it helps. It all has an eerie cast to it, and I'm sure today hasn't been very comfortable for you.
Please call if you need someone to talk to.
