Highlights of Belize

I'm not so good at chronological postings, so here's my memories of Belize in a different format.

Best View

On top of El Castillo, a Mayan ruin in the Cayo district. You could see a full 360 degrees, and it was the tallest spot as far as one could see. Views of both Belize and Guatamala, birds, more Mayan ruins hidden by jungle - beautiful.

Best Food (taste)

Habeneros, on Caye Caulker. I had Brazilian-style skewers of Chicken, Pork, and Shrimp, which were superb. The appetizers were great also.

Best Food (atmosphere)

How could I not mention Wish Willy's? You sit on benches on the guy's front lawn, waiting for food cooked from his charcoal barbeque, as the sun sets and candles light your table. It felt very comfortable - like barbeques back at good ol' 208 Dawson. The grilled lobster I had was superb.

Best Location we Stayed At

Well, I only have 3 locations to choose from, and Valarosa cottage was great (check out the colours!), but the Trek Stop was probably the best. Sleeping in actual jungle was so soothing - thousands of insect, bird, and animal noises, but it all sounded right - the animals were in their home, not being pushed out by humans. The place also had a Frisbee golf course in the jungle - nice touch.

Best Excursion

So many to choose from! We climbed Mayan temples, snorkelled, canoed through caves, inner tubed down a river....but somehow, the ruins at Tical are the most memorable to me. Which is quite surprising, since (a) it rained most of the time, (b) I felt quite sick most of the time, (c) our guide was kind of wacky. But Tical is *huge*, and there's something so utterly incredible about it. All of the Mayan sites we went to are huge, but Tical is so much larger because they have cleared so much more of it. Five huge temples, a ball court, palaces...it just keeps on going. Hopefully M will have the picture up from the top of Temple IV, just as the mists were descending. It was awe-inspiring.

Best Zoo

The Belize Zoo! (Only 1 to choose from, of course). A really nice, small zoo. Lots of interesting critters, and none of the animals are captured - they either are found hurt, or are recovered as they are trying to be smuggled across the border. Great place!

Well, that's about all for now. It was a great vacation, and now I'm married to a great woman :) (awwwww).
