Sonatine
Is now the second movie I've seen by Takeshi Kitano (the first being the blind samurai movie, Zatoichi). As I was watching Sonatine, I had absolutely no idea what to make of it. It rapidly changes from serious gangster movie to near-farce, and changes back and forth a number of times. Roughly, it's about a Yakuza who wants to retire and then is forced to. It's hard to describe more without giving anything away, other than to say that at the end of the movie I felt somewhat bewildered.
But the more I think about the movie, the more I appreciate about it. The main character is quite fascinating, and one gets, by the end, an almost complete sense of his life. I hope I'm not raising expectations too high here, but I really do recommend it. Be sure to go into it with an open mind, though.

oooh -- beat takeshi! I keep seeing this guy on Japanese tv and wondering who he is. One day I'll watch one of his movies...
After reading the Wikipedia article on him, I was going to ask you if you've seen him on TV :)
Oh! I just read you're going to Okinawa. Sonatine is (mostly) set in Okinawa.
